2 September, 2024- China’s Tianmushan No. 1 has reached a major milestone. It is the world’s first hydrogen-powered drone. The drone has a range of 100 kilometers (62 miles). It can hover for over four hours. The High-Performance Airborne Hydrogen Power System Development and Application team created the drone. They worked at Tianmushan Laboratory. It addresses key challenges in industrial drone technology. These challenges include limited flight range and poor performance in cold weather.

Weighing approximately 42 pounds (19 kg) and capable of carrying up to 13 pounds (6 kg), the Tianmushan No. 1 is a major advancement in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology. It features advanced capabilities. The drone can perform one-button autonomous takeoff and landing. It can operate beyond the visual range. Its broad range is up to 100 kilometers. This makes it particularly useful for remote and difficult environments. Engineers constructed the drone using lightweight carbon fiber. This construction enhances its performance. It also contributes to its industry-leading design.

The drone’s distinguishing element is the hydrogen-powered cell system. It has five to six times the energy density of conventional lithium batteries. It enables the drone to achieve longer flight times. The Tianmushan No. 1 includes a self-developed hydrogen fuel cell power system. It features a sleek carbon fiber fuselage. The drone also has a built-in intelligent parachute system. The drone uses custom carbon fiber hydrogen storage bottles. It also has an air-cooled fuel cell stack. These features ensure optimal performance in demanding conditions.

Safety is a key consideration for the Tianmushan No. 1. It is the world’s first manufactured drone driven by hydrogen. This drone includes an integrated parachute system.

The Tianmushan Laboratory tested the drone. It has proved its powers in an assortment of situations. These scenarios include oil and gas exploration. They piloted the drone for power line checks. They have also used the drone in emergency rescues. Additionally, they have also tested the drone for forest management. The drone was also examined for water conservation. The inaugural flight was successful. It marks a huge advancement in drone technology. It also highlights China’s ambitions in the low-altitude economy.
