30 October, 2024- Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced drone services at AIIMS Guwahati on Tuesday. This marked the initiation of a historic initiative. This project intends to transform the distribution of necessary medical supplies. The innovative project seeks to bridge the healthcare divide. It focuses on remote and challenging-to-reach locations. It tackles the local population’s significant last-mile delivery issues.
On February 20, AIIMS Guwahati started its first experiment of drone operations for medical purposes. The group was able to obtain the required permissions. The drones will maneuver across riverine environments and challenging terrain. They want to get to Primary Health Centers (PHCs), such as the 52-kilometer-distance Goroimari CHC. Additionally, they will provide services at Bongalpara Char PHC. It is 26 miles from the AIIMS campus in Changsari. They will also serve Batahidia Char PHC. This location is 45 km distant.
Assamese chars are distinct communities. Along the magnificent Brahmaputra River, communities live on sandbars that move. These regions have unique difficulties. In the past, they have struggled to provide healthcare. Their lack of connectedness and geographic isolation are to blame for this. According to AIIMS Guwahati’s executive director, Prof . Ashok Puranik, the advent of drones has drastically reduced travel times. We can now reach these difficult-to-reach places in a third of the time.
Drones are now at the forefront of our efforts. They facilitate the transportation of pharmaceuticals. They also enable the urgent delivery of medical supplies. They help the delivery of biological specimens for testing at AIIMS Guwahati. Prof. Puranik highlighted several critical uses. We dispatch emergency immunoglobulins for dog bite incidents. When there is a health epidemic, we airlift in water samples for analysis. We have also implemented telemedicine solutions. These solutions support those in need.
TechEagle Innovations runs this drone delivery service using the latest-generation Vertiplane X3 aircraft. The aircraft is capable of vertical take-off and landing, or VTOL. These drones can transform healthcare logistics in the region with a 3 to 5 kg payload capacity. Their services give long-underserved populations a lifeline.
