Boosting Inland Fisheries With Drone Technology In Kolkata

25 September, 2024- The Union Ministry of Fisheries is working to improve inland fisheries. Drone technology is being used in a trial project to deliver fish. The Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) in Barrackpore leads this project. The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana program includes it.

On Tuesday, organizers introduced the project to hundreds of fisherwomen. They belong to 16 self-help groups. These groups are active in isolated regions of West Bengal and Siwan, Bihar, close to the Sundarbans.
The event featured a demonstration. Abhilaksh Likhi, the Union Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, led the explanation. B.K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, also participated. CIFRI officials said they launched the project to address access barriers. They recognized the potential of drone technology. This technology enables faster delivery of vital goods to remote locations.
“ICAR-CIFRI is developing a drone design. Live fish will be able to be transported by this drone. Up to 100 kg of payload may be transported over a distance of 10 km by it, according to Das. The objective of this program is to manage inland fisheries and promote ecology through the use of drones. This action marks a significant turning point for India’s fishing industry. It promotes sustainability and long-term growth.
