India Unveils Advanced Kamikaze Drones With 1,000km Range, Marking A Strategic Breakthrough
16th August, 2024 – India’s introduction of indigenous kamikaze drones created by the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) represents a major technological advance in defense. Announced just before the 78th Independence Day, these drones signify a major enhancement in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities, aimed at bolstering national security.
Named “Bharat,” these kamikaze drones are equipped with a powerful 30-horsepower Wankel engine, allowing them to cover distances up to 1,000 kilometers while reaching speeds of 180 kilometers per hour. Each drone weighs about 120 kg and can carry a payload of 25 kg explosives, making it a powerful weapon in contemporary combat. Designed for loitering munitions, the drones can hover over target zones for extended periods, awaiting the command to strike with precision.
One of the standout features of these drones is their ability to function effectively in GPS-denied environments, utilizing India’s indigenous NAViC system. This capability ensures seamless navigation and mission execution even in areas where GPS signals are jammed or unavailable, providing flexibility across diverse combat scenarios.
The creation of these “kamikaze” drones is a component of a broader project led by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which is working in conjunction with leading engineering labs across the country. Dr. Abhay Pashilkar, Director of NAL, highlighted the strategic importance of these drones, describing them as a “game-changing” technology that could reshape modern warfare.
This unveiling marks a significant step forward in India’s defense strategy, underscoring the nation’s commitment to self-reliance and innovation in military technology. As India celebrates its Independence Day, these UAVs stand as a symbol of the country’s advancing defense capabilities.
